King Ranch has a long history of wildlife management. As early as 1947, famed conservationist Aldo Leopold called King Ranch “one of the best jobs of wildlife restoration on the continent.” Today, the ranch is a vital part of an incredibly diverse landscape in South Texas dubbed “The Last Great Habitat.”
The King Ranch birding and nature tour consists of visiting the King Ranch’s Santa Gertrudis division (the main entrance to that part of the ranch is just west of Kingsville) and included a BBQ lunch at the Caesar Camphouse (just north of Kingsville). The first stop upon getting to King Ranch that morning is the King Ranch Visitor Center area for birds. The tour then proceeds to more remote areas of the ranch and goes through a variety of habitats. The Santa Gertrudis division offers an opportunity to see a variety of tropical South Texas “specialty” birds like Green Jay, Great Kiskadee, Long-billed Thrasher, and a variety of other wintering and resident birds. It is possible to see as many as 50 to 60 bird species.
